That Moment When You Panic For A Video

Pressure. Deadlines. Gotta perform.

Now.

Two years ago, we took a trip to Waikiki Beach in Hawaii to film an Adaptive Surfing Championship. We were exploring the sense of community felt among surfers.

It was an abstract topic to dissect, and we had to identify what “community” meanswhat it looks like; and what it feels like. Otherwise, the story would not have been powerful. But we had to move quickly in figuring that out. We didn’t know whether this project was going to happen until a couple weeks before the Championships, usually we need more for our pre-production research. 😱

Yet, I wanted to perform, and I kicked it into high gear.

I started rapidly thinking about my own experiences with athletes with disabilities. These athletes let me into their words by allowing me to do the following:

  • Attend their practices
  • Visit their homes
  • Give them fist bumps and high fives

Because of that, my own potential skyrocketed, and I realized the same concepts and visual cues (high fives, fist bumps, etc.) applied to the surfers. From there, we researched YouTube videos on community and adaptive surfing, and wrote down the parts that were most relevant to our particular video.

It was massively helping, because I could quickly identify the shots, angles and perspectives that I wanted to emulate. We felt 1,000 percent better about our project, and I was able to sleep better. 😅

Often, people get very stressed when they are creating videos. They want everything to be perfect, and they want to make tons and tons of money. I totally understand, and am right there with you. I certainly don’t want anything to look terrible.

To keep things simple and easier, Google or YouTube search for videos similar to your own. Search words that align with your video, and see what other people have. Then, write down the shots and angles that you like, and try to emulate them.

That will make it so much easier, and it allows us to work at a much faster pace.
