When I was in college, I did theatre for fun, and our director would tease me for always looking so seriously.
She wanted me to turn that frown upside down, and I usually countered with the most extreme response of joy and happiness I could muster.
In college, I was happy, actually very happy. I just didn’t always look the part, as indicated in the photo.
College introduced me to all sorts of friends with disabilities, and their stories at times wore on me. I suppose I adopted the mindset that I would “save” them from all their troubles.
I put the weight of the community on my shoulders, and that was a never-ending grind.
I worked hard, and probably got in a few more advocacy battles than necessary.
Then I encountered the wheelchair racing team at the University of Illinois. They push 100 miles a week on the roads in their chairs, and their shoulders were HUGE.
Their hearts, though, were bigger.
They advocated for disability inclusion all the time, yet they were the happiest and most-generous people I ever met.
I spent hours with them, and they opened my eyes to my true potential. They taught that I can chase larger-than-life goals AND be happy.
They also reminded me that I was responsible for writing my own story.
Sure, I have a disability, but I can still do almost anything.
Sure, I didn’t have much money at the time, but I can get it.
Those wheelchair racers showed me how to tackle seemingly impossible goals with grit and joy. That same lesson drives how we operate at Team Trust. We build tailored strategies for nonprofits to expand their reach, increase revenue and grow efficiently — without the burnout.
